Software development – Building a New Piece of Software
Sometimes the software you bought off the shelf, or the cloud software you have subscribed to, fails to meet to a specific requirement you really need for your business. In such a situation, you have two options, build a new piece of software, or modify the existing software to meet your needs.
I have talked about this at length before, but to surmise, building a new piece of software can be costly to develop and implement. According to IT Donut, an online resource guide for businesses, “Developing custom software usually costs much more than buying, setting up, and supporting a standard package. It also takes time to develop software — perhaps six months or more — and the non-standard nature means you may be tied to an expensive support contract provided by the company that developed it.” The big advantage of course is that you can specify exactly the functions you want and tailor them to fit in seamlessly with you existing business operations, “You can alter the software as your business changes and you don’t have to settle for any of the compromises you might get with pre-packaged software.”

An easier approach to take would be to modify the existing software system or cloud service lacking the specific features or functionality. Often software packages and cloud services offer wiggle room that allows tweaking of specific features or functions. An example would be a third party application that allows modifications to be made to the off the shelf software’s database. This allows you to adapt the database to your own needs. You can add you own record structure, forms, and reports for example. You can also get the database to push and pull information from another database cutting down on the need for manual repetitive data entry. In these scenarios only a small amount of development is needed in bringing about the desired change.
